What Is IFA and Why Does It Matter?

AI Is Increasingly Running Directly on Devices
One of the main trends at IFA 2026 is the shift of some computing tasks from remote servers directly to devices. Alongside cloud services, manufacturers are integrating compact, energy-efficient AI models into computers, smartphones, vehicles, and home appliances.
Local processing allows applications to respond faster and perform some operations without continuously sending information to the cloud. This can be particularly important for devices handling confidential data and for use in areas with an unstable internet connection.
Some of the show’s most striking demonstrations fall under Physical AI — AI systems capable of perceiving their surroundings and interacting with the physical world. The First Wave of Product Launches
The first new products were presented during IFA Media Days, before the exhibition opened to the general public. The early announcements focused on autonomous home appliances and robotics, computers for running AI locally, new display technologies, and ecosystems connecting different device categories.
Computers: Local AI and Repairability
Acer focused on computer technology. Its announcements include laptops, portable displays, gaming devices, and compact workstations for professional AI applications.
The Acer Vero 16 was developed with durability and repairability in mind. Its design simplifies access to internal components: users will be able to replace the battery and SSD themselves, while removable I/O port covers and a detachable external hinge should make servicing easier.
According to Acer, the design is also intended to support processor upgrades for at least two generations. The model is scheduled to launch in the EMEA region in the first quarter of 2027. More about the Acer Vero 16
Acer also showcased a concept for its compact SFF RTX Spark system. According to the manufacturer, it delivers up to one petaflop of AI performance and is designed to run AI models and agents locally. No release date has been announced. More about the Acer SFF RTX Spark
Lenovo presented experimental mobile computing form factors. The Project AeroBlade concept explores the possibility of creating a thin, lightweight, high-performance laptop without a traditional fan. Displays Are Becoming Faster and More Advanced
Manufacturers placed particular emphasis on displays with high refresh rates, larger screen sizes, and new display technologies.
Acer introduced the Predator XB253Q U1 gaming monitor, offering a refresh rate of up to 1,000 Hz at Full HD resolution. The model is aimed primarily at competitive gaming. The company also showed Nitro monitors featuring Dynamic Frequency and Resolution technology, which allows users to switch between modes that prioritise higher resolution or a higher refresh rate. TCL and Hisense showed large-format televisions featuring Mini LED, SQD-Mini LED, and RGB MiniLED technologies. In addition to image quality, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on how televisions interact with other home devices and digital services.
Devices Are Becoming Part of Connected Ecosystems
Xiaomi is officially participating in IFA for the first time, presenting more than 380 products as part of its largest showcase of the Human × Car × Home ecosystem to date. The ecosystem connects smartphones, smart vehicles, and smart home devices. According to the company, Xiaomi’s global AIoT platform includes more than 1.16 billion connected devices.
A separate part of the exhibition marks Mijia’s first large-scale appearance in Europe. Its global portfolio includes more than 2,000 products across more than 130 categories, although the availability of individual models will depend on the market. Xiaomi at IFA 2026
XPENG showed a new smart electric vehicle, the IRON humanoid robot, and a modular flying-car concept.
Anker announced that it is bringing its product brands together under a single name. The company aims to create a more connected ecosystem of devices, applications, and support services.
This approach shows that manufacturers are increasingly moving away from treating devices as isolated products. Instead, they are positioning them as parts of wider systems in which data, functions, and controls can flow between devices.
Smart Home Appliances Are Becoming More Autonomous
Siemens showed the iQ700 oven, which can recognise up to 100 dishes and recommend suitable settings, as well as a heat-pump washer-dryer. The washer-dryer is scheduled to launch in March 2027.
Bosch presented the integration of smart thermostats with Bosch and Buderus heat pumps. The system adjusts the heating of individual rooms according to selected settings.
Miele presented automated solutions for cooking, dishwashing, and laundry care. The G8 Diamond dishwasher detects its load level and the types of tableware inside, then adjusts the wash cycle accordingly. Its hot-air drying system is designed to dry plastic items as well. The company also presented CulinaryCoach, an AI assistant in the Miele app. It can analyse recipes or photographs of handwritten recipes and then send the appropriate operating mode, temperature, and cooking time to the oven.
The Cary concept demonstrates what almost fully automated laundry care could look like in the future. In Miele’s concept, sensors and AI could recognise fabric types and colours and select suitable washing settings automatically. No release date has been announced. Miele at IFA 2026
Home robotics is also becoming more autonomous. Roborock presented robot vacuum cleaners with adaptive chassis that allow them to cross thresholds and low steps. Dreame demonstrated robotic lawnmowers designed for complex terrain, along with concepts for robotic systems designed to perform household tasks, including laundry handling. These concepts point to a possible direction for home robotics, but they do not mean that general-purpose household robots are ready for mass adoption.
What the Exhibition Means for Business
The presentations raise several important questions for businesses selecting and purchasing new equipment. How easily can a device be integrated into existing infrastructure? Does it support centralised management? How long will the manufacturer provide updates and technical support?
Businesses should also consider each product’s development status. Some of the models presented already have estimated release dates, while Project AeroBlade, Project Swan, Miele Cary, and other developments remain concepts.
In addition to performance, businesses should assess data privacy, compatibility, energy consumption, repairability, service availability, and the expected support period.

IFA Berlin 2026 shows that local AI, connected ecosystems, and home appliance automation are already appearing in commercial products. At the same time, some of the most striking developments – expandable laptops, general-purpose household robots, and fully autonomous laundry care – remain concepts or products without confirmed release dates.
